The Diplomat
(Der Diplomat)
3F / 7M
Dietrich of Bern wages a bitter war with the aim of regaining his lost kingdom. Countless people have already died, including Dietrich's own brother. Tired of fighting and disgusted by the bloodshed, Dietrich makes a radical decision: he renounces the crown and from now on wants to mediate between the warring parties. As a diplomat of the Hun king Etzel, he goes to the court of the Burgundians to win Kriemhild as Etzel's new wife – this way, a truce might be established. What Dietrich has not considered is that Kriemhild still has a score to settle with the Burgundians – in particular with Hagen, the murderer of her husband Siegfried…
«The Diplomat primarily sketches out the psychological profiles of its protagonists, who have to constantly readjust their positions in the global power structure.» (Nachtkritik)
«A dystopian play that wants peace and ignites a war of revenge. You have to listen carefully and stay tuned, then it's worthwhile, especially in relation to the present.» (Süddeutsche Zeitung)
«The issues addressed in The Diplomat are brutal, the fronts are hardened, the opinions are clear – and in this situation, theatre is excellently suited to address on stage the various different positions.» (Die Welt)
«An anti-war play full of violence and perfidy... It doesn't offer any solutions... This year, however, the merciless look at the arbitrariness of the powerful is particularly compelling.» (SWR)
