The desperate search is finally over: the apartment is a dream, and the location is perfect. But just as Marius, a lawyer in a large firm, is about to sign his lease, a competitor suddenly turns up: Sophie, a solvent doctoral student. Since the landlords, Uli and Silke, cannot agree on who should get the apartment, they have invited their two favourites to an ‘informal dinner for four’. Losing the nearly secured apartment is out of the question, and so Marius and Sophie pull out all the stops to present themselves in the best light while subtly discrediting the competition. As they engage in witty verbal sparring over canapés and crémant, it becomes clear that the mood between Uli, a smug retired architect, and his long-suffering and increasingly unnerved wife Silke is tense. Winning the sympathies of both landlords seems impossible. However, when Sophie's much younger and completely unsuitable friend Tim unexpectedly bursts onto the scene, Marius is almost certain of his victory – unaware of how the evening will escalate.
Loriot and Yasmina Reza would have enjoyed Lütje and Weber's social comedy, in which more than just good manners gradually break down in the struggle for the coveted living space, until in the end nothing and no one remains unscathed.
