To Delphi

The future is more unpredictable than ever: the climate crisis is escalating, catastrophes are becoming more and more expensive, insurance companies are pulling all the ripcords and stopping calculating their risks. Half-jokingly, half seriously, newsreader Renate, her husband Rolf, who is a TV series actor, and their animal-loving daughter Ilvy set out for the Oracle of Delphi to perhaps get a more accurate prognosis of what will happen to planet Earth. However, the harmless holiday excursion turns into a bizarre horror trip. The three fall into a time rift in the ancient temple and encounter people who grow fins after the sea level rises, polar bears who conquer the land after the polar caps melt, and beings who continue to exist eternally after their death as transhuman AIs in the cloud. At the same time, right-wing populism and nationalism are rampant, no matter how much the globe resists its inhabitants. Renate, Rolf and Ilvy are looking at horrible mistakes in the past and at an uncertain future, but without completely losing sight of the principle of hope – provided you are prepared to change your life now, in the present. And just as John von Düffel allows times, spaces and identities to flow into one another, so does he seamlessly switch genres in his little story of continued evolution, oscillating between serious drama, science fiction and overwrought sitcom.
