For the miser Scrooge, Christmas is just nonsense, so he makes his bookkeeper Bob Cratchit work relentlessly right up until the eve of Christmas Eve. After all, time is money, and one doesn’t waste it idly with one’s family. Scrooge simply ignores the fact that, like every year, his nephew Fred invites him to celebrate Xmas with him and his own family. But then, at night, three ghosts appear to Scrooge, first taking him back to the past, then showing him his bleak present, and finally offering him a grim glimpse into the future. Gradually, Scrooge realises that it is not only material possessions that matter in life …
John von Düffel has carefully updated Charles Dickens’ classic without losing any of the original’s charm. He has reduced the cast, apart from Scrooge, to four performers who take on all the other roles, so that A Christmas Carol achieves maximum impact with minimal effort – great fun for both Christmas fans and Christmas haters alike.
