Klaus Pohl
Klaus Pohl, born 1952, Rothenburg ob der Tauber, trained as an actor at the Max-Reinhard-Seminar. In 1976 he became a full-time member of the acting company of the Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg. His first play Da nahm der Himmel auch die Frau was produced by the Münchner Kammerspiele (1979). He has been writer in residence at the Schauspiel Köln and at the Thalia Theater, Hamburg. As an actor he has performed in productions by Giorgio Strehler, Robert Wilson, Luc Bondy and Peter Zadek. In 1991 he directed the world premiere of his play Karate-Billy comes home at the Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg. There have since been productions at 27 other German theatres. Stephen Unwin directed the London premiere at the Royal Court upstairs in 1992. His other 1991 play, The perfect stranger, has enjoyed similar success. In 1993 he created the leading role in the original production of Suicide in Madrid, directed by Sanda Weigl. In 1995 Pohl wrote and directed Waiting room Germany at Deutsches Theater; Mary Peate directed the London Premiere at the Royal Court downstairs in the same year. Klaus Pohl is married to the singer Sanda Weigl, has two daughters and lives in New York and Vienna.
