The "Canary" with it's yellow sheen is considered one of the rarest and most precious diamonds in the world - and is one of the few things Siggi Gruenebaum's father was able to take with him when the family had to flee from Nazi Austria to America. Since then Siggi has lived in New York and has his own, well established jewelry store. But now he is getting tired, sick, business is not doing well. Two events pull him out of his lethargy: an important customer wants Siggi to cut and grind a big raw diamond for him. And a new intern arrives from Graz, Elfie Schneider, a young jeweler who wants to be Siggi's apprentice. And he is not the only one who succumbs to her charm, curiosity and energy. Roland Moser, Siggi's son in law, falls in love with her. Siggi has to face several challenges: professionally, the cutting of the raw diamond is to be his final masterpiece, on a private level, he must save his daughter's marriage, and, maybe, thanks to Elfie, his wish to return happily to Austria one last time might be fulfilled. His heirloom, the carefully guarded "Canary" becomes the key to solving his problems.

Klaus Pohl's play deals with emigration, longing for home and the faraway, but most of all it is an usual love story, tender and full of humor, lightheartedness and melancholy.
