First scene: A flat in Leipzig. Corinna, a young doctor, moves out. She wants to travel to Peru to join up with her boyfriend. During the handover of the apartment keys, the landlord Joachim embroils her in a conversation until his eye falls on a strange object – in the corner of the apartment lies a small, human toe. Second scene: Corinna’s mother Mechthild’s apartment in Munich. Corinna has travelled here instead of to Peru. In the middle of Mechthild’s ongoing monologue Corinna asks her to fetch the toe, the only thing that still ties her to Leipzig. Third scene: Building site. Joachim’s house is sinking into rubble. On an improvised bed under the skylight, Mechthild and Joachim draw close to each other and continue the conversation that was interrupted by Corinna’s departure. In the corner, the cat chokes up a small bone.
