Ophelia is new in town and at school. She immediately notices Hamlet, a weirdly taciturn guy obsessed with dark thoughts who loves provoking people with sententious expressions. Yet she is fascinated by him and his ideas about feeling lost despite the possibilities open to him, and his searing doubts about his own existence. They fall in love but keep their romance a secret. Suddenly, Hamlet’s father dies and Hamlet changes from one day to the next. His mood is darker, his beliefs more fatalist. A new, terrible suspicion grows inside him. What if his mother and uncle are involved in his father’s death, hoping to use it to their own advantage?

Holger Schober toys with characters and motifs from Shakespeare’s classic play about the search for life’s meaning and transfers them into the personal phases in which we experience the greatest changes, including in our beliefs and assumptions: puberty. To be, or not to be? Or should that be: To snog, or not to snog? Welcome to the chaotic emotional rollercoaster of being a teenager…

World premiere
5.10.2014 Wiener Klassenzimmertheater (Director: Dana Csapo)
