August feels smothered by the closeness of the valley he lives in. Here, time has come to a standstill, no one dies and no children are born. When he discovers that he has a twin brother who disappeared without trace a long time ago, August embarks on a search for his long-lost sibling. His odyssey leads him to a city devastated by a civil war, then to a work camp from which he flees. After wandering through the desert he is saved only to be forced into wage slavery, from where he passes into the hands of human traffickers who transport him back into his valley. In the meantime life has changed drastically. Prosperity is everywhere and August’s brother has returned and taken over his old job. August suddenly feels more estranged from himself than when he left his valley. He realises that he needs to flee into the unknown if he is to survive.

Using short, detached dialogues interspersed with poetic narratives, Thomas Freyer’s play follows an anti-hero on his journey through a world where order and security no longer exist.

»no country. August is a major achievement. Home, escape, war, greed: everything is explored here. This artificially constructed dystopia is painfully realistic as a possible future.» (Sächsische Zeitung)

«Driven by the desire to create genuinely unique places, situations and encounters, Thomas Freyer forms verses, sounds and repetitions, in turn engendering likable, idiosyncratic characters whose fates and meetings both place demands on and fascinate us.» (Nachtkritik)

«A strong, beautiful and powerful text ... that endows all its characters with their own life, especially when they are behaving in a puzzling way; this is decisive for the outstanding quality of the play.» (Deutschlandradio Kultur)
