Germany is a nation of export, not only exporting goods all over the world, but also that which is good and true which is not always that pleasant for others. While the Germans in Wolken.Heim. (1990) were unable to move and therefore turned into a forest, in Strahlende Verfolger they swarm and shine the flood lights of their reason into the darkest back corners, the current preference being Europe, where no one spends more, but also no one earns more than the Germans do. As soon as they arrive in foreign places they act more at home than in their own home and get down to business.

Using the stories of German emigrants in the 19th century as a point of departure, who immediately saw themselves as immigrants when arriving in a new country, Elfriede Jelinek conceived a text that is utterly malicious, yet also hysterically funny about German workmanship, German delusions of grandeur, and German character in general: in particular its legendary depth which one can easily fall in.
