Thomas’ lover Matthias is on his deathbed, even though we are already past clocks and time. Thomas is a requiem, intonated with a man’s dying breath. A few laconic fragments of dialogue are compiled into conversations, which revolve haltingly around the unspeakable. The biblical names – in addition to Thomas, a nurse named Michael watches the dying man’s bed – are not random choices. But first, it is all about the more mundane aspects of hospice routine, which are presented to the freshly bereft by doctors and undertakers, spelling out the anatomy of death. After the routine activities, which almost take on a ritual quality, Thomas finds himself alone at his friend’s bed; and the author juxtaposes the dissolving momentum of death itself with a spiritual and at the same time tangible power – the power of love.
