On a school trip to Auschwitz, 17-year-old Thomas becomes painfully aware of the atrocities of the Third Reich for the first time. His previous cluelessness and inability to deal with politically dubious classmates are suddenly eradicated. He burns his passport and refuses to speak German any more. Unfortunately, his knowledge of foreign languages is rather limited. He meets the Polish policeman Tomasz, whose attitude towards German-Polish history is shaped by very personal experiences. Overcoming all the (quite comical) language barriers, a complicated relationship develops between the two of them, in the course of which questions about responsibility, xenophobia and the burden of the past are raised.
