The theatre lies abandoned; the stage is dark and empty. That's when the Blind Happening takes over: it is the realm of undreamed and forgotten figures, of the unconscious and the fantastic, of unresolved vestiges of reality. Shadows, avatars, and phantoms come from offstage and step into the light. John Porto, a computer programmer and known as the Prospero of Cyberspace, is convinced that he has control over their virtual play. But the spirits that he has called quickly develop a life of their own. Particularly Freya Genetrix who is able to move through time and space becomes the impersonated antithesis to Porto, in a game of constantly shifting levels.

“An encyclopedia of love’s entanglements, in times of the internet … The play which draws from many sources: Shakespeare and Raimund, Strindberg and Pirandello, feels uncomfortable in a fantastical way; by clinging to the individual, the private, it always makes that fragile floor resonate where all this is happening.” (Theater der Zeit) “The Blind Happening is Botho Strauß’ most beautiful play in a long time … He sneaks the virus of poetry into our programmed, formatted lives, he weaves his well-known motives into a kaleidoscopic round dance of scenes … He playfully reverses time, to recapture the cheerfulness with which it all began: the play between man and woman, as well as the play of theatre.” (Sueddeutsche Zeitung)

World premiere
